Blood, Smoke and Ashes

Available Now!

In the Fall of 1955, the state of Nevada used the electric chair to execute a prisoner for the first time.

It was also the last time.

Molly Blackburn, nicknamed Jane the Ripper by the Las Vegas press after killing eleven men while posing as a prostitute, was strapped down to the chair without incident.  The switch was flipped.

Everything after that went horribly wrong.

NEWS

Thanks to everyone who has been giving me feedback and finding small errors in Blood, Smoke and Ashes. Thankfully, there has nothing too egregious, some small spelling errors, an omitted word here and there, and missing periods at the end of paragraphs.  Right now, I am putting together the trade paperback version.  Formatting is done, just waiting for the last round of edits to get finished before I send off for an evaluation copy.

Other than that, starting to plot out my proposed next book, tentatively entitled The Hum.  But that may change.

Anyway, to all of you who have bought the book and read it, thanks.  And don't forget to "Like" the book's page and leave a review if you enjoyed it.  If not... remember what your mother said: "If you have nothing nice to say, don;t say it at all."

Contest set to begin when advertising blitz begins in three weeks.  No purchase necessary, just come back here, or to my Facebook page, and do a couple of things to spread the word and you will be entered.  $20 Amazon gift cards to be given away every week for six weeks, and if by some grace of god I can get this thing into the top 100, I will be giving away 1 $100 Amazon gift card.

That's about it.  If you haven't bought Blood, Smoke and Ashes yet, here's an excerpt so you can see what you're missing.  A second, different excerpt can be found at www.pandoraschildren.com, my official blog.  Enjoy!

“Molly,” Calhoun called.  His words seemed to be swallowed by the darkness moments after they left his mouth.

“You are either a very brave or very stupid man, Father,” Molly’s soft voice returned from everywhere.  “Either way, you are soon going to be a very dead man.”

“No.  No, I don’t think so.”  He sent his own aura out, a silvery pulse of light that pushed away the darkness around him.  But this was instantly countered by fingers of shadow that slapped back his light until very little remained.

“Your arrogance, Father, is astounding.  Just like those two men who came here to try and stop me.  You come here, into my home, to my place of power, and think you have a chance at destroying me.”

“It’s not arrogance, Molly.  It’s faith.  Faith that the human spirit is the strongest force in the world.  Faith that the human spirit can overcome all adversity.  Faith that there is always a way, even when the days are at their darkest.  Faith you never had.  I know what Max did to you, Molly.  I know what your father did to you.  I know what you experienced.  But don’t you dare think you are the only woman to suffer such savagery.  That is arrogance.  Most women, though they may be broken, find the strength to put themselves back together.  They move on with their lives, find self-worth again.  They find someone who loves them and start again.  It is not easy, but the human spirit is capable of it.  But you… you looked into the darkness instead.  Drowned in it.  And you liked it.  Liked how it made you feel.  Liked how victimhood gave you the freedom to act out your dark fantasies without guilt.  You would have been forgiven for murdering Max after everything he did to you.  You may even have been forgiven for the ten after that.  But you chose not to stop there.  You chose not to.  It was your decision and yours alone to continue on with this genocide.  Blame Max all you want.  Blame your father all you want.  But it all comes back to you, because we were all given free will, the ability to know good from evil, right from wrong,  and the ability to choose.”

Calhoun felt the darkness in front of him shift violently, slapping him backwards, and then she was there, in front of him, her spirit a runny, fuzzy red outline.  “You are not a woman, Father.  Have never been a woman.  So don’t you dare preach to me of understanding.  You know nothing.  Nothing!  You know nothing of being beaten day after day.  You know nothing of being violated night after night.  You know nothing of having a life inside of you snuffed out.  You know nothing!”

“I know you could have tried to rise above it all,” Calhoun said softly.  “I know that you were strong enough.”

“I am going to crush you, Father.  Break you.  Grind you to dust under my heel.  Dominate you in every way.  Make you wish you had never been born.  And then we’ll see how easily you put yourself back together.”

If you're intrigued, Blood, Smoke and Ashes can be found, for the moment, at Amazon for only $2.99.  Enjoy!
